| Use Living Books to Teach the Catholic Faith! RACE for Heaven study guides use Mary Fabyan Windeatt’s saint biographies to teach the Catholic faith to all members of your family. Written with your family’s various learning levels in mind, these flexible study guides succeed as stand-alone unit studies or supplements to your regular curriculum. Thirty minutes per day will allow your family to experience
The spirituality and holy habits of the saints
Lively family discussions on important faith topics
Increased critical thinking and reading comprehension skills
Quality read-aloud time with spiritual living books
Enhanced knowledge of Catholic doctrine and the Bible
History and geography incorporated into saintly literature
Writing projects based on secular and Catholic historical events and characters
Each lesson in the RACE for Heaven study guide contains the following components of study. Lessons cover between one and four chapters of each book depending on difficulty of the book. These lessons are intended to be used within a multi-aged group such as a family. (For a list of characters, secular as well as religious topics, and virtues covered within each study guide, see the product descriptions included within each Windeatt Study Guide description.) Vocabulary—Secular and Catholic vocabulary words are listed at the
beginning of each lesson. Any Catholic words or phrases not familiar may be referenced in a Catholic dictionary, or use
The Windeatt Dictionary:Pre-Vatican II Terms and Catholic Words from Mary Fabyan Windeatt’s Saint Biographies.
Comprehension Questions/Narration Prompts—Appropriate for all age levels, these questions can be used to increase reading comprehension or as prompts for narration. Answers to all comprehension questions are provided in the answer key.
Forming Opinions/Drawing Conclusions—As these questions require the student to develop an opinion, or to uncover or discover material not expressly stated in the text, they are designed to develop thinking skills in children grades four and up.
For Further Study—Appropriate for upper elementary through high school grades, these activities invite students to look more deeply at the historical events and
people that shaped the times of each character.
Growing in Holiness—These activities involve personal action and
interior reflection. By applying the spiritual lessons of the story to everyday life, the student is encouraged to develop habits in imitation of the saints.
Geography—The map(s) provided with each study guide serve to orient the students with respect to space—where the action of the story is taking place—as well as to acquaint them with common geographical landmarks.
Timeline Work—The creation of a timeline allows students to place the story’s events within a wider historical framework. Simple directions for making a timeline are included in each study guide.
Checking the Catechism—These activites require a copy of The Catechism of the Catholic Church (or the newly-published Compendium) as well as a catechism of your choice for elementary-aged students. Use these activities to reinforce Church doctrine as illustrated by the saints.
Searching Scripture—Familiarize the student with the inspired Word of God by studying the Biblical passages as provided.
Test—The purpose of the test is to ensure that the student has
comprehended the important events in each saint’s life as well as the lessons the story intends to impart. An answer key is provided for these questions.
Several additional books are helpful when using these guides for religious study: A Catholic Bible (The New American translation is used throughout the study guides.), The Catechism of the Catholic Church or the Compendium of the Catechism of the Catholic Church, 100 Activities Based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church for Grades One Through Eight (Ignatius Press), and a good Catholic dictionary. Each study guide contains an answer key but does not include the Windeatt biographies which may be purchased separately here. Save by purchasing these study guides with the biographies in sets by grade level: 3rd and/or4th grade sets, 5th grade sets, 6th grade sets, 7th grade sets, and 8th grade sets.

TESTIMONIALS: "We’ve begun the RACE Study Guide for grades 3-4 and I have found it easy to use and to implement into our busy day. We don’t do everything suggested. We do the vocabulary section, the comprehension questions and some of the further study section. We go at a slower pace, covering one chapter in the guide every 2-4 days, but at least we’re getting more out of our Mary Fabyan Windeatt collection of books! That was the whole purpose in buying your materials. Thank you for planning so much into your guides and for all the neat suggestions. Your ideas are there to make our school days run much smoother. I’m not really sure if I can say “add this” or “add that”. You’ve already got plenty for any family to cover. I have to add that I really like the maps and timelines. It’s great for the kids to see how the saints’ lives meshed in with the rest of history and to see where they lived within the world." A.K.
